"Santa Claus, a legendary figure who supposedly brings presents to children on Christmas Eve, is an American adaptation of European traditions concerning Saint Nicholas. Introduced into America by the Dutch settlers in New Amsterdam, features of the legend: the chimney descent and leaving switches for naighty children is of Dutch origin. His association with reindeer and the North Pole, come from Scandinavia. Counterparts of Santa Claus include: English Father Christmas, German Kris Kringle, Italian Befana and Russia’s Babouschka. Dwight House Deerfield, Mass. 1725 One of the best preserved colonial New England towns. Deerfield is located in the Connecticut River Valley. Moved here from Springfield, this eighteenth-century, gambrel-roofed house was completely rebuilt and restored on its present site."
