WILLIAM AIKEN HOUSE CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA The back reads, "The William Aiken House is one of the city's oldest and most historic homes built between 1807 and 1811. The home was owned by prominent businessman William Aiken, Sr., the first president of the South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company. In 1830 the home passed to his son, William Aiken, Jr. who became Governor. The home was sold in 1863 for $50,000 to South Carolina Railroad Company to use as the company headquarters. Southern Railroad acquired South Carolina Railroad and continued to use the home as offices. Little was done to maintain the home and at times it was doubtful if the building could be preserved at all. In 1964, the home was designated a National Historic Landmark, and in 1978 Southern Railroad deeded the home to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The home was sold to Patrick Properties and renovated into its original magnificent grandeur and is one of Charleston's most elegant event venues."
