DOCK STREET THEATRE CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA The back reads, "Built in 1736, the Dock Street Theatre was the first theater building designed solely for theatrical performances in America. Unfortunately in 1740, it was destroyed by the big fire that destroyed Charleston's antebellum buildings. Soon after 1800, on the same site, the Planter's Hotel was built. For fifty years, the hotel reigned as the principal hotel in Charleston. Following the Civil War, the Planter's Hotel fell into ruins. During the 1920's and 1930's, Charleston citizens became interested in preserving the city's heritage. The City of Charleston purchased the old Planter's Hotel and identified the former theater building as a project worthy of restoration. The new structure was modeled after the composite of London's 18th century theaters. On November 26, 1937, the restored Dock Street Theatre opened. It is now owned and managed by the City of Charleston. Each year more than 600 events are performed at the 135 Church Street location."
